Tips to help create a great essay:
- Write about something that's important to you. A moment in time, an impactful experience, an influential person, a treasured object, a beloved book. The ideas are endless. I can help you uncover them.
- Consider your topic. I have read wonderful essays on everything from washing dishes and sailing to songwriting and chocolate. Simple and focused can be impactful. Try to avoid overused topics.
- Be reflective. While the facts are important, what you felt, what you experienced, how you used the situation, and what you learned are far more compelling.
- Share vivid details. Use your senses. What did you see, how did it smell, where were you? This helps the reader relive your experiences.
- Make sure your essay “fits” within the entirety of your application materials. Ask yourself, does this essay share more about me and make sense with my other application items?
- Be clear and concise. Don’t say more than you need to, don’t repeat yourself, and avoid using words that you don’t know the meaning of.
- Be honest.
- Be yourself.
- Make sure you answer the question.
- Great essays take time. Start early and plan to revise several drafts, word by word until each one is meaningful.
